STIB/MIVB (Public transport operator in Brussels)

Tram Brussels TNG 2020
Mission

STIB/MIVB hired Yellow Window to develop the design for "Tram Nouvelle Génération" (TNG), a project with the goal to procure up to 175 trams, expanding and modernising the tram fleet in Brussels from 2020 on. Following the successful "design-first" approach executed on the M7 metro, Yellow Window designed the tram in the lead up to the tender.

We facilitated the total design process, starting with design concept and vehicle specifications in 2015. The process continued with the evaluation of the procurement phase, after which Bombardier was awarded the contract. In 2018, our role transitioned into liaising between supplier and operator. Working collaboratively, Yellow Window ensured the most optimal implementation of the design onto the Flexity platform. Following translation, we detailed the design up to validation of the mock-up before production in 2019 and onwards.

Result

Being heir to the iconic T3/T4 trams (running in Brussels since 2005), the TNG was born as a stylistic evolution of our earlier Brussels' vehicles, raising the aesthetic standard for public transport while unifying the MIVB/STIB fleet identity.

The design adds a more feminine, elegant and qualitative experience to the vehicle, ultimately enhancing the appeal of public transport in the European capital. Besides atmosphere, the TNG improves on comfort and capacity. On board, a more spacious interior, re-designed ceiling and grab bars, plus high-quality leather seating, offer new levels of comfort. Open, flexible spaces benefit capacity and circulation during peak hours, and offer more space for passengers with reduced mobility.

Safety for passengers and pedestrians was raised to a new standard, owing to the front-end made of soft materials, an ergonomic driving cabin with optimised viewing angles, external cameras and an obstacle detection system.

The vehicle born of this process demonstrates how the operator's emphasis on design results in tangible improvements in urban mobility, ultimately benefiting quality of life for all residents in the European capital.
