HTM
Tram design vision

Mission

Dutch public transport operator HTM approached Yellow Window to assist the then-upcoming tender for 56 LRV’s for The Hague.

HTM asked to align their design ambition with the vehicle specifications, and for Yellow Window to ultimately develop a design guide to help procure the qualitative vehicle design HTM desired.

2019

Result

Working collaboratively with a team that understood the value of integrating design upstream in the tendering process, Yellow Window translated HTM’s ambition into a design vision and ultimately design concept of the aspired vehicle. To arrive at the concept design, we facilitated several workshops with HTM that identified goals, challenges and ambitions, and tangible ways of translating performance aspects up to brand values.

Key elements in the passenger experience were translated to physical touchpoints, shapes, colors and moods. The interior features ensured a performant vehicle with optimized tip-up seats for ideal capacity and passenger flow: inviting and recognizable, yet clear and logical, providing all functionality in an HTM brand expression.

The resulting design guide visualized HTM’s goals and wishes and communicated the aspired design to prospective suppliers as part of the vehicle specifications. Conveying the vehicle design ambition but also explaining the rationale behind different requests, helped manufacturers in subsequent decision making for an optimized result and aligning their priorities with the wishes of the operator. A successful translation was further guaranteed by including compatibility with different existing vehicle platforms.

Stadler Rail ultimately won the contract that effectively translated ambition from the design guide in their TINA vehicles, entering service from 2026.

Yellow Window also designed the neighboring RandstadRail metro for Alstom, and HTM’s Avenio vehicles for Siemens.
